This handbook has been created to help you and your student be successful at Tomasita Elementary School.

APS Student Policies

Attendance

If your student is going to be absent from school, it is necessary for the student's family to call and leave a message on the attendance school line:

  • Leave student's name, your name, teacher name, and reason for absence.

If we do not receive notification, the absence is recorded as unexcused. Continued absences will be in violation of the New Mexico Compulsory Attendance Law, which may result in referral to the Court Liaison.

Excused Absences

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with proper notification:

  • Illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan)
  • Limited family emergencies
  • Family deaths
  • Medical, health or legal appointments
  • Suspensions
  • Religious commitments

Cell  Phones / Personal Electronic Devices

All cell phones must be turned off!!

They are to remain in backpacks during the school day. If you are caught using or playing with the cell phone, it will be taken away. A parent must meet with administration to pick up the phone.

Dress Code

Tomasita Elementary School is a Uniform school and the the Dress Code is as follows:

Shirts

  • Must have collars, solid colors only.
  • Polo shirts, (collared), buttoned dress shirts/blouses.
  • Turtlenecks, long sleeves, short sleeves
  • Any solid color.

All shirts and pants must be plain, without any designs, logos, writing, bling or prints.

Pants/Skirts

  • Pants, Capri pants, shorts, skirts, jean skirts, shorts, and plain jeans. Leggings may be worn under uniform skirts.
  • Plain jean and uniform pants.
  • Colors: black, navy, tan/khaki, gray, and jeans.
  • No sweats, athletic shorts or jogging suits.Jackets, etc.
  • Jackets that are worn outside only are exempt from the uniform dress code.
  • Sweaters and sweatshirts – pullover, button up or zipper – should be a solidcolor, if worn inside the building.

​​​​​​​Special Note

  • No chains.
  • Students must be in uniform dress code at all times. This includes “Special Days” such as field trips, picture days and Play Day unless designated by Administration.

Spirit Day is every Friday

Students may wear plain jeans with a Tomasita pride-colored uniform shirt (purple or turquoise), or a Tomasita, Manzano, or other favorite team t-shirt or jersey.
